This is the second time I’ve run a track event at Summit Point. Last year the car was running stock brakes with Pirelli P7000SS tires in the above size. Late into the first day, the stock brake system began to fade. The second day the stock brakes also began to fade late into the day and the pedal became mushy.
One week before the event, I installed the BIRA system 1. I ran Kerr Friction street pads on the front. Unfortunately I was unable the install the Pagid street pads on the rear as I did not have the correct “tool” for the rear calipers. Also put ATE Super Blue brake fluid in the system. I immediately noticed the firmer pedal feel and increased stopping power on the street. I was able to kick in ABS much quicker than before.
The night before the event, I switched to the race pads I had purchased. Kerr Friction race for the front and rear. Greg Amy allowed me to borrow his rear caliper tool so I could get the rear pads on.
The first run of the day, I was amazed at the stopping power of this system on the track. I was able to move my brake points much closer to the corners than last year. I was able to carry much more speed into and through the corners with confidence. I was out braking a number of other cars, including an old (~1972) Porsche. Again, much firmer pedal pressure and less work needed to slow the car. The day was HOT, and no fade at all, even late into the day.
A few days after the event, I pulled the race pads and change back to the street pads. Very little wear on the pads. The front rotors were still as smooth as new. The pads did not look damaged at all. I don’t think I even came close to the limit of these brakes!
